The essence of eBay’s current design system was based on the need for modernization through simplification, consistency and relevancy for customers. Growing in sophistication and dimensionality, moving from utility toward a more expressive experience—the goal of the project was to determine how the core product experience could feel more alive and crafted without losing functional simplicity.
Context
This project was a collaboration between the design expressions team and the design systems team. Initially three directions were explored with the goal of testing two directions in order to gain insight as to what evolution of the brand resonated best with customers.
Frameworks
Working across the two directions I bridged the gap between brand vision and product execution by validating design concepts against technical constraints, translating high-level directions into scalable, production-ready system frameworks. This helped to refine each visual direction, turning it into a system that could be applied across the core product screens in a way that was consistent.
Testing
When the directions were deemed ready for testing, I worked with the team to apply proposed primitives (color, typography, shape, elevation..) to the core product screens — making sure that the content was parallel across both directions as well as a core flow modeling the current customer experience.
I prototyped two of the three flows making sure we had a fully functional prototype for testing.
Outcome
The result was three interactive prototypes and supporting documents ready for handoff to UXR for testing.
